Itinéraires is an association offering a help service for youngsters : individual help (counselling, orientation), collective action (organization of sport activities such as climbing or canoeing with youngsters coming from different social backgrounds) and community action (organization of activities conveying co-operation values, pacific cohabitation and mutual aid). The aim of the workcamp will be to fight against ghetto mechanisms thanks to encounters and exchanges around an animation project for children (7 to 10 years old) coming from different social backgrounds. Work: First week: Renovation work in the psychomotricity’s room of the association. Second week: The volunteers will help with the activities for the children: Accompanying children in the discovery of nature and in the daily tasks during a camp which will take place in a village. Interaction with disabled persons from the village daily centre.

SHINE (Dublin)
'Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Ireland Nurturing Empowerment' (SHINE), is an annual residential Summer Independence Training Project which caters for teenagers and young adults with Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus (www.iasbah.ie). The primary aim of SHINE is to encourage participants to develop their independence and social skills in a fun and safe environment whilst also offering valuable respite for participants. Activity categories: the Arts, (dance, music, drama, art, film), well being, sports and recreation (extreme and mainstream sports, shopping, educational tours, day trips, quizzes, theme nights, discos), personal development.
Work: Includes encouraging and supporting participants in every way so that they have a confidence building and fun experience, assisting participants with personal care, taking part in activities and encouraging participants to take part, ensuring physical and emotional safety of participants, kitchen duty; setting up and clearing away after mealtimes (this is done on a rota basis), clamping wheelchairs onto buses (training provided). Volunteers and team members always work in pairs when helping participants.
Study: Health, Education, Social Care, Disability Awareness, Occupational Therapy.
Accommodation: Dorms or twin rooms. Meals provided by the centre
Language: Very important: Advanced to fluent English is essential in order to be able to communicate with the participants.
Qualifications: Volunteers must be motivated, enthusiastic and have a sense of fun for this extremely worthwhile and enriching experience. Volunteers working and/or studying in the Health, Education or Social Care disciplines are particularly welcome. However, experience is not essential as training is provided.
Terminal/Region: Important: All the meeting times are in the mornings of the arrival days so volunteers must therefore spend the previous night in Dublin.
Extra info: Training will be provided by IASBAH at the beginning of each week of the project. In addition to the SCI application form, volunteers must send us a motivation letter, providing details for two referees for both written and verbal references, each volunteer will be interviewed by phone. We will also ask the volunteer to complete a Declaration Form. Important: Please send the volunteer application form first and VSI will send details of these extra requirements, this will ensure a place is reserved for volunteers.

The Ententes is a non-governmental association created by farmers. It wants to be an economic alternative for its members. Its aims are : an education work, less inequality in villages between Rich and Poor, stopping the emigration to big cities.
Work: workcamp of immersion in small rural villages. Volunteers will be separated by groups of 2 or 3 persons and will be hosted in a family. They will participate to the daily tasks of the inhabitants.

Work: The idea of this Work Camp is gathering young visual artists coming from different cultural backgrounds and from different countries to work along with Egyptian youth. Together they will use their experience in visual artistic practices as an introduction for intercultural dialogue and to overcome cultural, ethnic, religious, and political differences. This will be through their interaction together and with the street, they will use the public spaces as a place for their artistic practices, just before the month of Ramadan. VITRY/PLANETE LILAS 1
« Planète Lilas » project takes place in a district park, south of Paris. Its aim is to create and reach a planet friendly biologic agriculture, including fair trade and sustainable development principles, a space open to the residents of the district, a place for discussion and a collective garden. 2009 will be the third year we propose this work camp. Volunteers will work for the garden promotion: sowing, weeding, harvesting, market-garden tunnels building, and also work with the members of the association, children workshops’ animation, local events participation.

MANU Neznayka is a character of a famous Russian fairy-tale, a funny, lively and very active character, a typical child. This is why the name was chosen for a rehabilitation centre for ill children, conveniently located just about 20—25 minutes from Moscow —the capital of Russia and one of the largest and most vibrant cities in the world. The area is a lovely fairy-tale land with a large castle-like house in its centre and a river (called Neznaika as well) and two small ponds hidden in a green forest around it. The center needs a lot of help, and this is exactly what volunteers can do — offer a hand at reconstructing and renovating the house to suit the needs of the children better, clean the ponds and do other things for the centre while enjoying the centre’s facilities and occasionally visiting Moscow to explore what it has to offer.
Work:Participation in a renovation of the building; Improving the territory nearby; Cleaning the ponds on the territory
Accommodation: In a guest-house building and/or in tents, food prepared by volunteers in a kitchen

Summer Work Camp - Kinniya/Trincomalee
Trincomalee is a tourist attraction due to its beautiful beaches in the Eastern part of Sri Lanka. This area has been affected by ongoing armed conflict for over 30 years. Kinniya is a small town 15 km South West of Trincomalee. The population of Kinniya consists of 97% of Muslims and 3 % of Hindus. The geographical location has kept people of Kinniya isolated from other ethnic groups and further isolated by the restriction of movements of the war situation. This work camp will create an opportunity for local and international volunteers to have an exposure to a community affected by the war. Local community will be benefited by exposure to people with multi-ethnicities. Integration is a priority area in order to maintain a lasting peace. Hosting organization, Kinniya King Alfred Pre School was open in 2005 March 15 after the tsunami in 2004. The students of King Alfred School (KAS) in London raise funds to help the children who are affected by the great tragedy. KAS maintain their relationship with people in Kinniya for over nearly four years. SCI held its first international work camp in 2006 December and has been having weekend work camps since. Food &

Work: Volunteers will be working in the school premises helping with maintainance work of the pre-school building and the garden. Bring along your sleeping bags and work-kit.

8. Greece - SCI Hellas

The workcamp is organized in cooperation with Happy Children-Happy Youth Camps, a Non-profit Volunteers’ Organization with 77 years of action. The volunteers will help the Camp staff in hosting 140 very poor children from families with financial and social problems. The camp is situated in the Pateras Mountain, near the city of Elefsina (about 40km from Athens).
Work: Preparing meals, kitchen cleaning (main tasks!). Cleaning, painting, garden work (mostly during the first 3 preparation days, before the children’s arrival). Optional and additional activities; organising and assisting in the activities with the children. (e.g. sports activities, handicrafts, group activities, games, music)
Study: The volunteers will learn how our organisation provides social and educational support to the children. They will also learn things about Traditional Greek Shadow theatre, handicrafts, Greek dance lessons and other creative activities.
Accommodation: In tents provided by our organization (own tents not necessary), access to the shower, bring a sleeping bag. The volunteers will spend the entire period at the camp.
Language: English, Greek speakers are welcome. Extra info: Medical tests (x-ray, blood test, Faeces microbiological examination) are required for work in kitchen, under European Union and Greek Sanitary clauses. No drugs, no alcohol allowed. Transportation to Elefsina or Athens will be possible at free days. Visits to nearby archaeological sites or resorts. 18-35 years old volunteers are welcome. Terminal/Region: Closest terminal is Eleftherios Venizelos Airport Athens, but transport will be arranged from the centre of Athens or ‘Magoula’ Suburban Railway Station (near Elefsina) on the 3rd of July.

Work: Aims: to raise awareness among the participants and the population on responsible consumption and sustainable development; to develop skills related to waste recycling and contribute to environment preservation; to run activities in order to increase the level of commitment at local level (Amarante) for sustainable measures. Activities: group dynamics; presentation to the city and region; discussion on the workcamp theme (objectives, tasks division); visit to most important places of the city; training about sustainable development (ex.: workshop about Fair Trade); direct contact with the population (interviews); use of multimedia.
Accommodation: Participants will be accommodated in Casa de Cultura e Juventude de Amarante, which have its own kitchen, wc and showers.
